As Louisville’s only Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Racing team, we are proud to be a small part of the worldwide explosion of the sport. Our team was founded in March of 2013, and we welcome breast cancer survivors regardless of age, fitness level, or previous experience. The art of dragon boating allows survivors to regain physical and emotional strength in a supportive community of hope. We share a zest for fun, friendship, health, and sportsmanship. After a life-altering diagnosis, we “awaken the dragon” and celebrate life, one stroke at a time.
Derby City Dragons is more than a dragon boat team — we are a community built on strength, resilience, and connection. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, our team brings together breast cancer survivors, caregivers, supporters, and allies who believe in the power of movement, teamwork, and showing up for one another.
Dragon boat paddling is at the heart of what we do, but the bonds formed on and off the water are what truly define us.
Our Story
Derby City Dragons was formed with a simple but powerful belief: no one should face cancer — or life’s challenges — alone. Dragon boating offers survivors a way to reclaim strength, rebuild confidence, and rediscover joy after diagnosis and treatment. For caregivers and supporters, it provides a meaningful way to stand beside those they love.
Each paddle stroke represents perseverance. Each race is a celebration of life. Each practice is proof that strength comes in many forms.
